Have you ever made a promise to yourself and then broken it, such as a New Year’s resolution to eat healthier, quit smoking, or lose those pesky 5 pounds that you’ve been dragging around for 2 years? Why do we do this to ourselves? Why do we make promises and not follow through?

We know what we should do, but we still don’t do it. Inherently we know attaining a dream takes work and a true commitment. W. H. Murray wrote, “Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.”

So, that’s what I’ve been missing! Most of us don’t commit to what we fully desire. We half-ass it and are committed more to our excuses or our limited beliefs than to attaining the goal itself. In Debbie Ford’s book “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers” she wrote:

When you know you should be doing one thing and you constantly do another, you’re killing your spirit and denying your essence. This makes it difficult to discover your vision. Each time you do what you say you’re going to do, you’re training yourself and the universe that you can be counted on. The universe starts to open up the path for you when you get committed.

This was an ah-ha moment for me. I have some pretty big dreams and goals on my list, but I have been dishonest with myself. For several years I have had the goal to lose 7 pounds. I would get close, but as soon as I got close, I would sabotage myself and eat a burger and fries. This was a total lack of discipline and commitment to my goal. It really comes down to this – when I couldn’t count on myself to keep my word about a dream, neither could the Universe. Each time I broke a promise to myself and didn’t follow through on a goal, whether small or large, it chipped away at my self-esteem, and my self worth started to diminish.

I recently got really committed and lost the pounds I’ve been struggling with for years. A strange thing happened. When I got committed, the Universe helped me out. I felt like my mind wasn’t struggling with food decisions, friends supported me, and it felt a lot easier than previous times trying to lose weight. This time was different. I was committed and I wasn’t going to break the promise to myself. When you want to change something in your life and you trust that you’re capable of doing it, you have freedom. When you make a commitment to do something for yourself, and you know you will follow through, you have power.

When you truly make a commitment, you cut off all other options and excuses. Once you decide to fully commit to your dream or goal, your destiny is shaped. Your destiny will be realized once you keep the promises you’ve made to yourself by following through on your commitments.

No one will do the work for you. You have to do it yourself. You must decide, get committed and take action. If your dreams of losing weight, having a loving relationship, or having a passion for your career are an ongoing battle, then it’s time to look inside yourself and challenge your beliefs of why you think you can’t do something. Ask yourself if you truly want to accomplish this goal. If so, get committed to what you want and then make a plan and follow through. Keep your promise to yourself and manifest your dreams.

I close my yoga classes with “know that you have the power, the beauty, the radiance and grace to set your attitude for each day. Trust that you have all of the answers within you.” You have all of the power within you to be the person you want to be, to accomplish the things you want to do, and to live the dream life you want to live.
