On the SOUL SCHOOL with AUDREY podcast , our topic is all about addictions and shadows. You’ll learn what a shadow is and 3 steps of how to heal that inner demon. This is a very personal issue for me, as I have struggled with food my whole life.

Some people have alter egos. Beyoncé has Sasha Fierce. I, unfortunately, have Fat Kid Freddy. When he is in control, I travel down a shame spiral into guilt, self-loathing and disappointment.

Shadows are those parts of our personality that we don’t like and try to hide, so we stuff them down. But just like our shadow, it will always follow us until we really look at it.

This mindful practice takes time and is a true practice. We all have our habits that we have developed over how many decades, so, be gentle on yourself when creating new habits and thought patterns.

Three ways to curb your inner Fat Kid Freddy:

  1. When upset, don’t eat. No good action comes from anger, shame, boredom, guilt. So just stop and give yourself time and space between what triggered you and your reaction.
  2. Be mindful of your emotions. In that gap between the trigger and your action, let your mind rest in that gap. Feel the emotions, the hotness, the edginess. Breathe. After about 60 seconds, those feelings don’t seem so sharp, so hot. They may still be there, but this is the practice of open awareness meditation – to witness what shows up and not get caught up in the story and drama.
  3. Heal to be whole, not to numb. Instead I have the power to go inward and feed what I really am yearning for. We distract with food, binge on food or tv, social media…we do all sorts of things except look at the source. Usually there is some pain that needs healing or nurturing. When I am stressed, triggered by someone, tired. Think about a baby – we listen to them and nuture them, but not ourselves.

I deserve to feel empowered, worthy, taken care of and loved…and so do you.

It will definitely be a practice. I’ve come a long way from daily fast food and soda meals, crash diets and diet food. And so have you.

Take it one step at a time – not even one day at a time. Be present and aware. show yourself some love and compassion. You’ve got this!
