On Friday, I was carrying a bunch of groceries into my home, and thought I could open my back door while carrying 7 bags in both arms, a box perched on my knee and pressed against the wall, and a bag of fruit tucked under my chin. I looked like I belonged in a circus. My fingers started to turn the knob, and then everything tumbled and fell. How could I have let my ego convince me that I could hold on to all of this stuff and still enter?  I laughed, as this was a good lesson just before teaching my detox workshop: We must put it down, carry only what we need, and enter.

Saturday’s detox workshop was awesome – we had 22 beautiful people releasing toxic energy physically, emotionally and mentally through yoga postures, breath-work, and meditation. When we refuse to deal with our feelings, and instead stuff down our anxiety, stress, frustration, anger and any other negative feeling, this negative energy gets stuck in our body and shows up in other ways physically through an illness, headache, neck pain, or any other physical blockage or injury, or it may be projected outward to someone or something else. What you resist will persist, until you deal with it.

When you release toxic energy, it never feels good at first. After the workshop a bunch of negative stuff came out – I got a headache, was gassy (sorry, TMI), I was agitated and exhausted. Makes you wanna come to my next detox workshop, huh? Usually the bad stuff happens before the good stuff. There is something better that lies ahead when we do the work to peel back our layers in order to find the gold.

I woke up on Sunday feeling refreshed, lighter, brighter, and happy. The detox worked! I was 1.5 lbs lighter too – BONUS! But there was something much more rewarding. I walked my dogs in the morning and I cried. This wasn’t The Ugly Girl Cry where you’re balling your eyes out profusely, mascara running down your face, chest heaving, and you can’t breathe because you feel hopeless, confused or anxious. It was a cry of the purest form – of joy. Every thing was clearer and more vibrant. My feet felt like they kissed the ground with each step. The leaves seemed to dance with the breeze to welcome the morning. Maybe it was the crazy storm this past week, and finally having sunshine and blue skies made me truly appreciate the day and be absorbed in the beauty of nature. Maybe it was the detox workshop the day before that released some heavy junk that was held hostage. Maybe because I released this negative baggage, I felt free to welcome and receive bliss, gratitude and love. So, I softly wept from joy, and with a smile on my face, I walked a little slower, being more mindful of each moment in order to gratefully experience it fully.

Sometimes we are too full to experience the simplest pleasures in life. We are too busy to take the time to breathe deeper, to smile bigger, and appreciate how lucky we truly are. We are too busy physically or mentally to become still and listen to our heart. We are too busy making lists, and getting from here to there to even appreciate the journey. We fill up with food, people, pills, social media, TV, our addictions, outside stresses, and inside toxic thoughts, judgments and beliefs –- we are simply carrying too much!

You have the choice to detox physically, mentally and emotionally to create more space in your body, in your breath, in your mind, and most importantly in your heart. You must put it down, carry only what you need, and enter. Walk freely through the door and experience life more deeply.

Weekly Meditation:  Close your eyes, and slowly and deeply breathe in and out. Notice what you are carrying and if it’s too much. With your exhales, image releasing what is weighing you down. Breathe slowly, breathe freely, and open the door.
