It’s pretty easy to get sick during the Holiday season. For most of us (the unlucky ones who don’t live in Florida), the weather has turned really cold, there are Holiday parties, which means alcohol, sharing of food, and more germs. In addition with the Holidays comes more stress, dealing with family, more multi-tasking, minimal sleep which all take a toll on our immune system.

It’s ironic that this week’s blog is about taking care of yourself and then I get strep throat! It’s so easy to take our health for granted, until your throat seizes up and you feel like you’re swallowing razor blades.  Needless to say, I’ve learned a few things during the past 4 days of being jailed in my house by strep throat and I’m sharing them with you for this week’s blog. Basically, don’t do what I did this past week and you’ll be good to go.

 

Here are my Top 10 Ways to Avoid Getting Sick.

1.    Wash your hands and mouth often and avoid touching your face.

You get sick for one reason and one reason only: germs. Bacteria and viruses make you ill by finding a way into your body through physical contact. Since most of your contact with the world happens through your hands, washing them can stop germs from making the leap from contaminated surfaces to inside your body. The easiest place to transmit illness is through mucous membranes such as your eyes, mouth and nose.

 2.    Eat healthy – Stay away from processed fatty foods & eat your greens

Many times when I’m stressed, I emotionally eat…anything that is cheesy, fried, salty and processed. Don’t do it! These foods induce inflammation (simple sugars and starches) when your body is already weakened. Green juice and veggies are a great way to get extra nutrition and boost your immune system.

 3.    Take your vitamins and Probiotics

It’s a good idea to take a food-based multivitamin as well as Vitamin D. Also, probiotics help reduce inflammation in your digestive system.

 4.    Get plenty of Zzzz’s

One of the best ways I found to avoid getting seriously sick is to get extra sleep for a few days. Naps are my BFF right now.

 5.    Exercise …but don’t exercise…

Exercise helps to boost your energy. Gentle yoga or Yin Yoga is awesome for boosting your energy and recharging your lymphatic system. However, if you’re feeling lethargic, then listen to your body and skip working out to avoid getting sick. Your body will need the extra energy to fight off any bacteria or virus you are exposed to.

 6.    Avoid sharing food at parties

Communal food is common at parties. If a dip has a spoon in it, that’s cool, but if everyone’s hands have been in the pot, avoid it. You may be not only be sharing a yummy spinach dip, but you also may be sharing in someone else’s germs.

 7.    Drink a lot (water, not alcohol, silly!)

Your body needs to properly function and water flushes out toxins. Unfortunately, alcohol reduces the effectiveness of your immune system, so limit your alcohol intake this season.

 8.    Apple cider vinegar is your friend

This miracle vinegar helps to break up mucous throughout the body and cleanse the lymph nodes. Believe it or not, research suggests that apple cider vinegar can help with allergies because of its ability to reduce mucous and sinus congestion. Add a little to water and gargle to clear a scratchy throat.

 9.    Just Say “NO”

During the holidays, your energy can be spread really thin. It’s easy to feel like you have to go to every event, entertain, be all and do all.  We start to compromise ourselves and this is how we get sick. It’s okay to say “no” and make sure you get time for yourself to do the things to make you happy, healthy, and whole.

 10. Give yourself a break

Not everything will get done. It’s a crazy hectic time. Be compassionate and gentle with yourself. Take 5 minutes each day to meditate and tune into your heart and quiet your stressful mind.

Okay okay, but what if you’re already sick or getting over something nasty (like me)? Do all the steps in the Top 10 List and most importantly CLEAN! Clean every surface, knob, wash your sheets, and change your toothbrush. Basically anything you have touched while you were sick must be cleaned because germs and bacteria can still be alive and thrive.
