My favorite Season is here! In the spirit of spring and new beginnings, this is a time to renew and grow. Just as flowers are starting to sprout from the ground and blossom on trees, it is our time to shed our unwanted layers, flourish and shine. This may mean cleaning your home and closets or getting rid of those unwanted pounds you put on during our winter hibernation. Remember too that spring-cleaning means detoxing internally. With the Holiday celebrations and meals behind us, we can focus on detoxing our digestive system, cleaning out our emotional baggage, and letting go of negative thoughts.

1. Clean

De-clutter your closet and get rid of anything you haven’t worn in 2 years and either give what you don’t need to charity or have a clothing swap party with your friends. Pack away your winter clothes and organize your spring and summer clothes to get you excited to be outside.

2. Get Moving

Now is the time to shed any extra pounds, elevate your heart rate and get outside and feel a little more alive. Try a new workout class, or grab a friend and do yoga focusing on twists and forward bends to detox your liver and organs. Maybe even go on a yoga retreat. I have 2 yoga retreats this month. Yes, it’s a shameless plug!

3. Food

Forget about “dieting.” We all love pizza, burgers and fries, but they should be eaten in moderation, rather than be a major food group. Spring is a time to detox your digestive system. Make simple changes like adding more greens and fresh fruit to your meals and snacks. Replace a meal with a green juice. Add maca powder for energy and ginger to your smoothies or juices. Start to notice how much more alive you feel.

4. Be Creative

Have you been thinking of a creative project? Maybe you’re thinking that you aren’t creative. Well, if you’re already having these thoughts of “can I even write, or paint, or cook?” Guess what? You already are a writer, painter, or chef. Everyone needs a creative outlet to let out some expression. Don’t hesitate. Just start today and let go of any attachment to the results. Let your creative juices flow.

5. Be Quiet

Get some quiet time in order to feel rejuvenated. Go to sleep a little earlier in order to wake up refreshed. Meditate and focus on your breath to bring yourself into a present state of awareness.  Meditation is key to emotional detoxing. Be conscious of your breath and internal negative dialog. Are you retelling yourself the same thoughts and stories over and over? Can you let the story go? In a world where everything is about multi-tasking, being addicted to our technology and being on the constant go, it is difficult to stop and power down. However, having silence, meditating and resting are crucial for you to bloom and grow.

Francis Bacon said “Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.” Spring-cleaning can be a little overwhelming, but take a cue from nature and start blossoming by just taking one step at a time. The key to any transformation is to just start.
